Design and Technology

We aim for students to enjoy designing and making products and to be able to recognise and appreciate that design and technology is all around them!  Students will combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. We want students to think creatively to improve the quality of life, and enjoy solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

Students respond with ideas, products and systems, challenging expectations where appropriate. They combine practical and intellectual skills with an understanding of aesthetic, technical, cultural, health, social, emotional, economic, industrial and environmental issues. As they do so, they evaluate present and past design and technology, and its uses and effects. Through design and technology, students develop confidence in using practical skills and become discriminating users of products. They apply their creative thinking and learn to be innovative.

Food and Product
Projects that progressively challenge design skills and tools, skills equipping students with the knowledge and understanding to carry out the following projects:

Year 7- desk storage solution, keyring torch, fruit smoothie, roasted vegetable salad, chicken wrap

Year 8 – mini theatre set design, CO2 drag racers, fresh pizza’s, spaghetti carbonara, tiramisu

Year 9 – design inspired mood lights, floating civilisations, the Mother Sauces, profiteroles, chicken schnitzel.

Product Design – OCR
Projects build upon the skills and knowledge to reflect design inspirations while learning about the wider issues of design and the needs of the primary users and stakeholders. Projects include a bespoke luxury trinket box, suited to that of a particular primary user. These skills prepare the students for their GCSE coursework element for year 11.

Food and nutrition – AQA
The students further enhance their practical cooking skills whist learning about stages of life and what makes a balanced diet. The students will also understand the importance of how other cultures and religions factor into meal planning.
