Film Studies
Film Studies (GCSE – Key Stage 4)
"Film is one of the most powerful ways we understand stories, society and ourselves."
Film Studies at GCSE introduces students to the language of film and develops their understanding of how meaning is created on screen. Through the study of a wide range of films—from British cinema to global texts—students learn to analyse, interpret and evaluate how film constructs ideas, identities and narratives.
Our aim is to develop students who can think critically about what they watch, recognising how film shapes understanding of the world and encourages reflection on issues such as representation, identity and culture. This supports students in becoming attentive and discerning learners, in line with the Jesuit Pupil Profile.
Our provision includes:
- a knowledge-rich curriculum based on the Eduqas Film Studies specification
- explicit teaching of film form (cinematography, editing, sound and mise-en-scène)
- development of analytical skills, enabling students to interpret meaning in film
- opportunities for practical filmmaking, supporting understanding through creation
- structured support for extended written analysis
